Since it was first introduced as a dental material, composite has changed the way restorative treatments are planned and executed around the world. With its outstanding properties and remarkable results, composite has become the material of choice for leading dental restorative experts globally.

What Are Composite Fillings?

Composites are resin based filling materials that have replaced amalgam and other materials that were previously being used in restorative dentistry. Some of their most characteristic properties include:

  • Aesthetically pleasing
  • Non-toxic, non-irritant and 100% bio-compatible
  • Easy to manipulate and use
  • Insensitive to dehydration
  • Excellent structural integrity
  • Inexpensive and readily available
  • High bond strength with enamel and dentin
  • Zero mercury content
  • Highly versatile
  • Non-corrosive

Not only can composites be used for conventional restorative procedures, they have also made a massive impact in the field of cosmetic dentistry. With options such as composite veneering and direct dental bonding, patients can now achieve complete smile makeovers in a single visit.

During a composite filling procedure, the carious tooth is first isolated using cotton rolls to prevent contamination by saliva. The cavity is then prepared using a mechanical hand-piece and the decay is properly removed. The cavity is etched using a mild acid based gel in order to create micro-porosity that facilitate better adhesion of the filling material to the tooth.

The gel is then washed away and the tooth is dried completely. A fine layer of dental bonding material is applied and then layered while replicating the natural morphology of the tooth. Once the cavity has been adequately filled with composite the material is cured with a blue light.

Composites are easy, fast and flawless in terms of aesthetics. They have truly reshaped the way restorative dentistry is being performed in different parts of the world today.
