Am I A Candidate for Dental Implants?

You may be a candidate for dental implants if you have lost one or more teeth. Most patients are able to receive dental implants without any problems or complications. The most important factor is your overall health.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants look and feel just like natural teeth. Dental implants are not susceptible to decay, unlike natural teeth, because dental implants are constructed of metal. Consequently, an implanted tooth will never require a root canal.

For most people, there is no better option than dental implants for replacing lost teeth. Without a doubt, dental implants are the most successful and longest lasting solution for tooth replacement.

Is Age a Factor for Dental Implants?

Many older patients are under the false impression that they are not a good candidate for dental implants. The fact is, your overall health is the main focus. If you are healthy enough to have a tooth extracted, you’re probably healthy enough for dental implants. The decisive factor is whether or not you have a sufficient amout of usable bone to which the implants may be attached.

However, even if you do not currently have a sufficient amount of usable bone, a bone grafting procedure may still allow you to receive dental implants. Your dentist can determine whether you have a sufficient amount of usable bone and, if not, whether a bone graft would resolve the issue.

What Conditions Might Rule Out Dental Implants?

Any patient with a medical condition that makes even minor surgery risky, would not be a good candidate for dental implants. For example, patients with serious heart disease, a history of recent heart attack, or major heart valve problems are usually not able to undergo elective surgery without great risk.

Also, patients who are currently undergoing cancer treatment or treatment for certain bone diseases should probably postpone any dental implant procedure.
